AFF U16: CAMBODIA FORCE A DRAW AGAINST MYANMAR

VIENTIANE (10 July 2011) – Myanmar’s hopes of a grand start fell through as Cambodia forced a 1-1 draw in their Group B AFF Under-16 Championship match at the National Sports Complex here today.

Although into its fourth day today, it was Myanmar’s opening game of the regional youth tournament. Their hopes of a memorable start soared when they sensationally took the lead through Aung Myat Soe just past the half hour mark.

Their plans were derailed however when Cambodia snatched the equaliser after a costly mistake by the keeper. Myanmar in fact could have easily lost if not for a brilliant save from their keeper Thant Zin Nyo who saved a penalty from Soueg Sophana.

“Several of our players were injured from the first match, so we have had to make changes to the starting line-up,” said Daisuke Yoshioka, the chief coach of Cambodia.

“But still we at least managed to win one point which is not too bad.”

Although into its fourth day, Myanmar were only playing their first game of the tournament while Cambodia were contesting their second. While Myanmar were aiming for an opening victory, Cambodia was targeting a second successive win.

Instead, both sides ended up sharing points after scoring a goal each, both of which were in the first half. Myanmar will have their next game against Philippines while Cambodia have a date with Vietnam in two days time. With four points in the bag, Cambodia are top of the group but they will have to wait for the outcome of the Singapore-Philippines tie later this evening to see if they remain ahead.

It was scorching when the match started yet the Myanmar and Cambodia players did not seem bothered by the severe conditions.

They threw themselves into the game but it was Cambodia which had the first shot at goal. Firo Fi In should have scored, he was in the middle of the box and had a clear shot but fired weakly. Myanmar had their chance in the 31st minute but Hlaing Bo Bo was half a step slow in running down Kyaw Min Oo’s low cross and connecting it in.

A minute later, Aung Myat Soe pounced on a rebound to smash his team ahead. But their joy was shortlived as keeper Thant Zin Nyo hesitated to come off his line. He eventually scampered out but it was too late and Cambodian skipper Hoy Phallin lobbed it over the onrushing keeper.

There was not much action in front of the goals as the game was centered mainly in the middle of the pitch. Unable to get close, the Myanmar forwards took some long shots which sailed the wrong way. In the 70th minute, it looked like the game was over for Myanmar when defender Min Thu brought down striker Nub Tola in the box.

Soueg Sophana hit it right but to his dismay, Zin Nyo also went the same way.

AFF U16: TOLA GUIDES CAMBODIA OVER PHILIPPINES

VIENTIANE (8 July 2011) – Cambodia claimed a hard-fought victory when they edged the Philippines 2-1 in the opening Group B match of the AFF Under-16 Championship at the National Sports Complex here this evening. Striker Nub Tola was in excellent form as he blasted both goals to deliver three important psychological points to his team in this tournament.
With a win in hand today, the pressure would have eased on Cambodia as they prepare to face the other rivals in the group – Singapore, Vietnam and Myanmar.
The Philippines will now have to make amends in their remaining preliminary matches if they hope to advance to the next stage. Their hopes however suffered a crushing blow when striker Ryu Nell Fegidero was sent off in the dying minutes.
“The first half was better than the second after we took out the regulars. There are certain improvements which we need to work on especially in the passing and evading markers,” said Daisuke Yoshikoa, the chief coach for Cambodia.
“But winning is always good.”
It was a great start for Cambodia as they broke through after just seven minutes. The Filipinos were barely warmed up when Nub Tola blasted his side ahead. In one of their first moves forward, the Cambodians attacked from the right with Nub scoring off a header from Firo Fi In.
The Philippines were not affected by the early strike and launched right back into attack mode. Their efforts paid off within four minutes when Fegidero scambled in a close range shot.
Cambodia were soon ahead again, in the 20^th minute. Nub proved to be the spoiler again with a well taken shot to provide his team a slim lead going into the break.
Nub proved to be a thorn in the Philippines side as he constantly took shots, including some superb long range strikes, in the last few minutes of the half. He had two clear misses, from the top of the box in the 31^st minute and a header in 37^thminute.
Cambodia, led by Nub and Firo, continued to pressure after the break. The Filipinos however were better armed and did well to keep the Cambodian strikers out.
Despite their untiring efforts, Philippines were unable to claim the equaliser. In the dying minutes, goal-scorer Fegidero picked up a second booking and was sent off.

David Booth is named as New head coach of Phnom Penh Crown

Phnom Penh Crown FC are very pleased to announce the appointment of DAVID BOOTH as the club's Head Coach until the end of the current season. David, 62, is a widely-travelled British-born football coach who has been in charge of three different national teams - Brunei, Myanmar and Laos - and who has coached club teams in three continents and ten different countries.

His enthusiasm for the game knows no bounds, having spent the past 20 years overseas, after he began his career as a tough-tackling defender with Barnsley and Grimsby Town in the English Football League in the 1960s and 1970s. A knee injury forced him to quit playing and he went onto manage English clubs Grimsby and Darlington before his first appointment overseas in Ghana in 1990.

Success with his team Goldfields in Ghana during his five years there was followed by a three year stint in charge of the Brunei national team, another spell in Ghana with Asante Kotoko and then three years as coach of the Myanmar national team, who he took to 3rd place in the SEA Games in 2001. More success followed in India with Mahindra United, in Vietnam with Khanh Hoa, in Thailand with BEC Tero Sasana, in the Maldives with Valencia FC and two more clubs in India, Mumbai FC and a return to Mahindra United, where he was voted Indian coach of the year in 2010.

His third period in charge of a national team was a 7-month spell last year with Laos, who he guided through as AFF Suzuki Cup qualifying champions before moving into the Thailand Premier League with Sisaket at the start of 2011. He parted company with Sisaket in April and is now looking forward to the immediate future with Phnom Penh Crown FC, the reigning Cambodian League Champions and current league leaders. David will be in charge for the second half of the Metfone C-League season as well as Crown's forthcoming AFC President's Cup games that will take place in Chinese Taipei in September.

Phnom Penh Crown FC President, Rithy Samnang said; "We chose David because of his record of success and his well-established reputation in Asia. He has coached the national teams of Brunei, Myanmar and Laos and many other club teams too. He comes to us with a wealth of experience and a proven track record and we are fortunate to secure his services for the rest of the Metfone League season, as well as the important AFC President's Cup matches that lie ahead. Central Asians bunched together in U-16

Kuala Lumpur: Central Asian neighbours Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan found themselves in the same group in the AFC U-16 Championship 2012 qualifiers on Wednesday.

Uzbekistan, who finished runners-up in the last edition of the competition, were placed in Group C alongside Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Bahrain and India.

Forty teams were divided into two zones and separated in seven groups of six or five teams each. Each group will play one round league at a centralised venue and top two teams from each group will make it to the tournament proper.

Third best teams from each West and East zones will complete the 16-team line up of the 2012 finals.

Defending champions DPR Korea were placed in Group E along with China, Timor Leste, Singapore, Malaysia and Macau.

Cambodia face the Maldives

After spending six hours at Kuala Lumpur International Airport before a flight of over four hours on Saturday, the 20 players and seven officials of the Cambodian national football team finally arrived in the Maldives ahead of their participation in group C of the AFC Challenge Cup.

Cambodia play their opening game against the hosts at 11pm tonight Cambodian time at the Rasmee Dhadu Stadium. The teams have previously met in 2001 for the preliminaries of the 2002 FIFA World Cup, the finals of which were held in Korea and Japan.

The first leg in Male saw the Maldives crush the visitors 6-0 before drawing the return leg 1-1 in Phnom Penh. Striker Sam El Nasa and assistant coach Ieng Saknida are the only surviving members of that squad still involved with the current Cambodian national team.

On arrival in the Maldives, Cambodia’s head coach Lee Tae Hoon admitted he knew little of the history between the sides when questioned by local journalists, but remained confident of success in the tournament.

“Now we have a strong squad. We have changed a lot,” he said.

“So I believe that my players can do better than in the past, despite just a couple of days of preparation [due to the conclusion of the Hun Sen Cup the previous weekend].”

“Now we’ve climbed from 166th to 154th in the FIFA World rankings. It’s a good achievement for us,” he said.

Ouk Mich, Cambodia’s captain and goalkeeper, also noted their recent improvement. “We cannot compare to what happened last 10 years,” he said during a press conference in Male yesterday.

“I believe that we can take revenge on the home side.”

Despite having a population of under 400,000 Maldives are one of the best teams in South Asia, and were crowned champions of the 2008 South Asian Football Federation Cup after beating India 1-0 in the final. In 2009, they were runners-up in the same tournament as India gained revenge with a 3-1 victory after penalties.

They also drew 0-0 at home with South Korea in a 2006 World Cup qualifier played in 2004. Their newly appointed coach Andrés Cruciani played as a defender for the U20 Argentina national team in 1985 and coached Bangladesh from 2005 to 2007.

Captain and striker Ali Ashfaq is considered one of the best players to come from the Maldives, and is hailed as the playmaker of the team by Maldivian journalists. He spent one year with DPMM FC of Brunei before returning home in 2008 to join VB Sports Club, which have won the last two seasons of the domestic Dhivehi League.

The highly decorated player, nicknamed “Dhagandey” meaning Man of Steel, asserted that his team carried a significant home advantage over Cambodia. “Our team will play well because of our supporters,” he said yesterday.

Phnom Penh Crown will host Group A

Kuala Lumpur: Defending champions Yadanarbon of Myanmar will have to navigate uncharted waters after being drawn on Monday with debutants Jabal Al Mukaber Club of Palestine and Tajik club Istiklol for the 2011 edition of the AFC President’s Cup.

Group B is completed by Bhutan’s Yeedzin FC, who played in the last edition too.

Yadanarbon edged past Kyrgyzstan’s Dordoi 1-0 in the previous edition’s final in Yangon but the inclusion of Jabal Al Mukaber in this year’s competition is set to further spice up the competition. This is the first time ever a club from West Asia is playing in the AFC President’s Cup.

Cambodia’s Phnom Penh Crown FC will play host to Group A, which also comprises Kyrgyzstan’s Neftchi Kochkor-Ata, Bangladesh champions Abahani and Sri Lanka’s Don Bosco Sports Club.

Nepal Police Club (Nepal), Taiwan Power Company (Chinese Taipei), FC Nebitchi (Turkmenistan) and WAPDA (Pakistan) form Group C, which will be played in Kathmandu, Nepal.

The group matches will be played from May 13 to 31. The top two teams from each group will qualify for the six-team finals to be played at a centralised venue.
